Cake & Frosting Options
So, first, figure out the cakes and frosting you want to use. You can make your own cupcakes from scratch or use a boxed mix.
Here’s a Super-Moist Chocolate Cake, Retro Red Velvet Cake and a Super-Moist Vanilla with Cake Vanilla Buttercream if you’re wanting to make your own cupcakes.
If you’re in a pinch or just don’t want to deal with making them homemade, then by all means, use your favorite boxed cake mix to make cupcakes. Most boxed mix cupcakes make 20-24 cupcakes.
You will need buttercream frosting and food dye for most of these Halloween cupcakes ideas, so for a shortcut, you could use store-bought frosting with food dye.
I am partial to homemade buttercream on these cupcakes, because homemade frosting just tastes so much better that frosting out of the tub, if you’ve ever compared. Plus, homemade buttercream is pretty easy to make.
Ghost Cupcakes
Hurry quick! No time to lose; before the ghosts run out of BOO’s with these frightfully, cute Ghost Cupcakes!
- For these Ghost Cupcakes, pipe vanilla frosting on top of each cupcake, then add two candy eyeballs.
- For a swirly ghost like this, use a large star tip, or for a smooth ghost effect use a large round tip with your pastry bag.
- You can also use a ziplock bag and snip a hole in the corner to pipe out frosting as well. That’s pretty much it and we’re here for the ghostly Boo’s!
Witches Cauldron Cupcakes
“Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.” These Witches Cauldron Cupcakes will definitely get the party started!
- We made these easy by scooping green colored frosting into a piping bag.
- To make green frosting, use yellow and green food dye to get a neon green color when coloring your vanilla buttercream.
- Swirl a frosting layer over the cupcakes, then pipe bubbles on top.
- Add some skull and bones candy and candy eyeballs on top to make it look like a bubbling stew. You can also use green sixlets for bubbles and/or use some green gel frosting to make it look slimy too!
- To make bubbles with frosting, you could use this set of round frosting tips or just use a ziplock bag and snip a corner of the bag to pipe your frosting out.
Zombie Brain Cupcakes
Our Zombie Brain Cupcakes can be made pink or green! We went with coloring our frosting a light pink and piped out some oozing bloody brains for devouring!
- Color your frosting pink or green and swirl a thin frosting layer over the cupcakes. Place remaining frosting into a piping bag with a small or medium round tip. Or you can just use a ziplock bag and snip a corner of the bag to pipe your frosting out for the brains.
- Pipe a line of frosting down the center of your cupcake for the center line of your brains.
- Pipe a winding pattern of frosting on each side of the center line to create the brain wrinkles. You can do more wrinkles if you want to! I went pretty basic and I used a medium round tip to make my squiggles.
- To make the blood, in a small bowl, stir together your a few tablespoons of corn syrup and a few drops of red food coloring. Drizzle the tops of the brains with the corn syrup blood.
