Ok…don’t mind me, but I kept finding excuses to be in the kitchen and I just couldn’t stay away from my new sweet best friends. Warm or room temperature, they are scrumptious. Trust me, I know.
My mom used to bake the old fashioned banana bread with walnuts when we were growing up, so banana bread has always been a family favorite, but adding chocolate just makes them super delish!
These chocolate banana muffins were ideal for sharing at work the next day. Saved me from eating all of them. Just call me Miss Piggy!
Ingredients You Need
Banana Chocolate Chip Muffin Recipe
- ripe bananas
- vegetable oil
- eggs
- brown sugar
- all-purpose flour
- unsweetened cocoa powder
- baking soda
- vanilla extract
- semi-sweet chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips or chocolate chunks
How to Make Chocolate Banana Muffins
- Preheat oven to 400. Line muffin tin with papers or grease muffin pan. Can also do mini muffins.
- In large mixing bowl, mash bananas to your liking. (I like it a little chunky!)
- Add oil, sugar, vanilla and eggs to bananas and mix well.
- In another medium bowl, whisk flour, soda and cocoa powder together and add wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, slowly beat or stir gently.
- Fold in the chocolate chips. (Should be a thick batter.)
- Spoon or scoop batter with a large cookie scoop into prepared muffin liners or muffin tin.
- Bake in preheated oven from 15 – 20 minutes. (You can touch tops and see if done, or insert toothpick and if it comes out clean.)
- Cool slightly and transfer to wire rack. Store cooled muffins in airtight container to retain moisture.
Substitutions
- I used ¼ cup vegetable oil & ¼ cup olive oil in my recipe – I try to use more olive oil in a lot of recipes because it’s so much better for you! But you can use any oil you have on hand.
Mix-Ins
- Want some texture or more flavors involved? Besides semi-sweet chocolate chips, you could use milk chocolate chips or peanut butter chips in this recipe!
- Add some pecans or walnuts, mix them in or just add them to the tops before baking.
- You could also add some shredded coconut, for a really yummy muffin twist!
It’s awesome with hot chocolate…if so, did you ever dunk the banana bread in the hot chocolate like a donut? Yep…that would be me!

I’m so happy you found this recipe too Chelsea! Thank you so much for making it and modifying it to fit your family’s needs! I as well have found this recipe to be very versatile. 🙂
I have made these many times with the kiddos and they are always loved.
I have even substituted unsweetened applesauce for the oil and do 3/4 c wheat flour + 3/4 c all purpose (for the 1 1/2 c total) and they still turn out great. Also, we love using dark chocolate chips. Happy we found this recipe-thank you!
Updated Cassy! Thanks for letting me know and I hope you enjoy! 🙂 Happy New Year!
It never says when to add the vanilla or chocolate chips
