Instructions How to Make Easy Orange Iced Cinnamon Rolls

 MAKING THE ROLLS

  1. Into a bowl combine the milk, softened butter, sugar, salt, yeast and egg together.
  2. Make sure all the ingredients are at room temperature and the milk should be preferably warm. Make sure it’s not hot.
  3. Add in the flour into this mixture and combine them together to form a shaggy dough.
  4. If you are kneading the dough in a stand mixer, use the dough hook attachment to knead the dough. You only need to knead the dough 3-4 minutes by hand or 1-2 minutes if you are using a stand mixer until it form a smooth dough.
  5. The shaggy dough may feel sticky and you may be tempted to add more flour but don’t do that. The dough will come together.
  6. Shape it into a ball and then flatten it a little and then cover it with a bowl or kitchen towel and let the dough rest on the counter for five minutes. By doing this, it allows the dough to rest for a few minutes so that the gluten strands will relax and further preventing our dough from rebounding back of the dough while rolling it into a thin rectangular sheet.

DIVIDE AND SHAPE THE cinnamon roll DOUGH

  1. First, roll the dough into thin sheet approximately 1/4th inch thickness and to form an 18X15-inch rectangle with long edge nearest you on a lightly floured surface using a rolling pin.
  2. Spread very soft butter all over the surface and then sprinkle on the filling mixture evenly.
  3. Starting with long edge nearest you, roll the dough into a cylinder.
  4. While rolling, do not to roll them tightly as they need some room for them to expand sideways while proofing and while baking.
  5. Mark gently with a knife to create 12 equal portions starting in the center. For the cleanest cut, slice by holding a thread or strand of dental floss underneath the cylinder, and cross ends of the floss over each other and pull. Slice cylinder into 12 portions evenly.
  6. Transfer to a 9 x 13 baking pan or baking dish greased with butter or cooking spray.

PROOFING THE CINNAMON ROLLS

  1. Cover the pan loosely with plastic wrap and allow the rolls to rise until puffy and the rolls are touching one another for 50 to 60 minutes.

BAKE THE CINNAMON ROLLS

  1. Bake the proofed cinnamon rolls at 350 F for 19-20 minutes.
  2. Let the cinnamon rolls cool down for 2-3 minutes. Slather the orange glaze on top while the rolls are still warm. Add jelly dollops and press into rolls if you wish to have an extra burst of fruit flavors.

ORANGE icing for the orange sweet rolls

  1. Whisk together the confectioners’ sugar, orange juice, zest and vanilla to get a delectable orange glaze. Pour on top of the rolls. Add a dollop of jelly to the centers if desired. Scrumptious gooey orange cinnamon rolls!

Storing Your Cinnamon Rolls With Orange Icing

Our gooey orange cinnamon rolls can be stored in different ways depending on how long you need to keep them.

  • Room Temperature – You can store these at room temperature by tightly wrapping them in plastic and putting them in a sealed airtight container or covering them with foil for up to two days.
  • Refrigerator – You can put them in the fridge in a sealed airtight container or plastic wrap for up to four days.
  • Freezer – If you want to keep them for longer, you can freeze them for up to two months (or one month if they already have the orange icing on the cinnamon rolls). Make sure to wrap them tightly in plastic and foil before freezing.
  • Thawing & Reheating – When you want to eat them, thaw them overnight in the fridge and then bake for 15-20 minutes. To reheat them, you can microwave them for 30 seconds or bake them in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes. Cover them loosely with foil if using the oven or air fryer, or wrap them in foil if using the toaster oven.

More Variations

  • Add some cream cheese to your orange icing for a delicious orange cream cheese frosting to really amp up the tangy flavors!  Make sure the cream cheese is softened so it mixes together well.  Add anywhere from 2 – 4 ounces.
  • You could opt for orange extract if you don’t have orange juice, but I feel fresh orange juice just makes the world of difference when it comes to orange flavors!  Getting lots of vitamin C!
