What Are Buckeyes?
Buckeyes are peanut butter bon bon candies that look just like buckeye nuts and are a popular Christmas buckeye candy! You can’t eat actual buckeyes, they are more like a seed.
Ohio, the Buckeye State, received its nickname because of the many buckeye trees that once covered its hills and plains. The Ohio State University has buckeyes as their mascot and according to folklore, the Buckeye resembles the eye of a deer and carrying one brings good luck.
We actually had a buckeye tree in our yard when we were kids. Buckeye seeds resemble edible chestnuts, but Ohio buckeye fruits are not edible and can be toxic. We used to make jewelry out of them and pelt them at each other, like kids do! 🙂

Instructions How to Make Buckeye Peanut Butter Chocolate Fudge
- Prepare an 8” or 9” pan greasing with butter or line with parchment paper.
Peanut Butter Fudge Layer
- In a microwave-safe bowl, add the peanut butter, butter and vanilla and melt in the microwave for 90 seconds.
- Stir to combine until smooth and creamy using a rubber spatula or wooden spoon.
- Add the powdered sugar a cup at a time and stir to incorporate thoroughly.
- Transfer peanut butter mixture to the prepared pan and press into the pan with your hands or use an offset spatula.
Chocolate Fudge Layer
- In a microwave bowl, melt the chocolate chips in 30 second increments until melted about a total of 1 minute to 1-½ minutes. Add in butter and sweetened condensed milk and stir until smooth and creamy.
- Pour over the peanut butter fudge.
- Let cool at room temperature at least 4 hours before cutting, or chill in the refrigerator for faster set up time.
- Cut into 1-inch squares or bite size servings and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
How to Serve Buckeye Fudge Tips
- Set the fudge on the counter and let it warm at room temperature for a few minutes before slicing into bite-size pieces for nice even slices of fudge.
- Cutting it cold right out of the fridge; the layers may separate, so you want to let it come to room temperature.
- I used an 8″ pan and cut in 48 pieces. Fudge was thick, which I prefer, but if you want a thinner fudge, use a 9″ pan.
Storing Fudge
- Store chocolate peanut butter fudge in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
In conclusion, creating delicious and decadent microwave Buckeye fudge doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With the right ingredients, you can whip up this beloved treat in no time.
