About the Chocolate Melts
- For the chocolate, I love using the colored candy melts. It’s delicious for fondues and candy dipping as well!
- The wafers melt smoothly and set up firmly when used. They are perfect to use with cake pops, fruits, and adding an extra sweet taste to your baked goods.
- There’s no need to break or chop bar and it melts more evenly with same size wafers and it has a Zip-up pouch, which makes it easier to portion out product and makes it easier to store between uses.
- Wilton Candy Melts is a great choice for melting chocolates and they have many colors. There are other brands you can use like Sprinkle Bee Sweets and Chocomaker.
Chocolate Melting Tips for Perfect Candy Bark
- Whether you’re using a bowl, pot, slow cooker, or utensils, be sure they’re completely dry. Even a small amount of water can cause your candy to harden and create unsightly streaks.
- Don’t overheat your candy. It may be tempting to melt it on a high setting or for too long, but this can lead to a loss of smooth texture and consistency. And avoid adding any liquids, as this can also affect the candy’s consistency.
- Know when your Candy Melts candy is ready for use. Look for a smooth texture that resembles cooked pudding – this is a sign that it’s ready for molding, dipping, or drizzling.
- Thick candy? No problem. If your candy becomes too thick, simply add 1 1/2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening for every 10 ounces of candy. For 12 ounces, use 2 teaspoons. This will help thin out the candy and make it easier to work with.
- When making your bark, ensure your bark is at its best by avoiding excess condensation, warm temperatures and off flavors.

How to Make the Unicorn Bark Candy!
- Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. In separate microwave-safe bowls, melt each of the colored chocolate melts separately in the microwave at 20 second intervals until completely melted.
- Throw out some marshmallows on the baking pan. Then, pour each of the chocolates onto the parchment paper side-by-side and spread it out using the back of a spoon or offset spatula. Using a knife, toothpick or lollipop stick, make swirling motions in the chocolate swirling into the each other. You can also take small spoonfuls of any of the colored chocolate and swirl it into any of the colors as much as you want or less if you want.
- The chocolate will set up quickly, so while the chocolate is still melted, add your candies and decorative sprinkles on top along with the marshmallows so they stick to the chocolate and let it set to firm up.
- Once it is set up, break into pieces and serve or place in some fun candy type bags with some colorful ribbons for a nice party gift for your guests to take home or eat at the party!
- To speed up the process, you can place your unicorn bark candy in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes or longer if needed. Or simply freeze for 5 minutes until firm.
Storing Chocolate Unicorn Bark
Did you know that your homemade chocolate bark can last up to 2-3 weeks in an airtight container? To keep your bark from melting, I highly recommend storing it in the fridge.
But if you want to save some for later, simply wrap it tightly in a few layers of plastic wrap and pop it in the freezer for up to 6 months. Your future self will thank you for this delicious treat on demand.
