Ingredients You Need for Easy Grinch Cookies
Easy Grinch Cookie Recipe
- all-purpose flour
- baking powder
- salt
- unsalted butter, cold and chopped into cubes
- granulated sugar
- eggs
- vanilla extract
- Yellow and Green food coloring or gel to mix together
- Hearts or red sprinkles on top
How to Make Grinch Sugar Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt to combine.
- Using mixer, on medium speed beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla, and beat until combined.
- Slowly beat in the flour mixture with some yellow and green food coloring and mix dough on low speed until cookie dough and color is dispersed throughout the cookie dough evenly. Add more yellow or green food coloring as needed without over-mixing cookie dough too much.
- Place the remaining 1/4 cup sugar in a shallow dish. Using a small, medium or large spring-loaded cookie scoop, divide the dough into balls, then roll in sugar to coat evenly. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, spacing 2 inches apart and very slightly flatten cookies. Cookies will spread out.
- Add a jumbo heart sprinkle on top of each of your cookies. If you want larger hearts, after the cookies have baked and cooled, melt some red colored chocolate melts and pipe one on top of cookies or use red frosting and pipe heart on top of cookies and sprinkle with red sugar.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes for small, 10-12 for medium and 12-14 for large cookies or until the cookies set and begin to brown.
- Cool cookies for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
- See step 5 for how to make larger hearts in middle, if desired after the Grinch cookies have cooled completely before adding piping designs on top.
Rolling Sugar Tips
- Roll your cookie dough balls in sugar before baking and not after they’re baked, so the sugar stays intact for this Grinch cookie recipe!
- Roll each ball of dough in a shallow dish filled with granulated sugar. This creates that slightly crispy exterior and beautiful sparkly appearance.
Storing & Freezing Grinch Sugar Cookies
- Our Grinch Christmas cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Freeze balls of cookie dough without the sugar coating in a freezer-safe container, tightly wrapped plastic wrap or a ziploc bag. Allow cookies to thaw overnight in the fridge or at room temperature, then bake as directed below. By coating the balls with sugar before freezing, the dough will absorb some of the sugar, so it won’t have quite the same visual or texture impact compared to rolling in sugar right before baking.

The kids will love these Grinch Christmas cookies and even though I made mine jumbo size, you can make them smaller or medium-sized if you want to add these adorable cookies to your Christmas cookie trays for your holiday entertaining or just because they would be super cute! Just adjust the baking time!
